Compact photometer PF‑12Plus
The compact photometer PF-12Plus is a tailor-made device for mobile water analysis, which can be used to evaluate VISOCOLOR ECO, VISOCOLOR Powder Pillows, NANOCOLOR ECO and NANOCOLOR tube tests. The icon-based menu navigation and the clear task bar make the PF-12Plus an easy-to-use photometer for all areas of water and wastewater analysis without the need for extensive training.
The PF-12Plus photometer is the only photometer in its class that meets the requirements of the military standard (MIL-STD 8100, test specification 514.2). Thanks to the robust and waterproof housing (IP 68), it can be used under the toughest conditions.
Due to its compact dimensions and the robust, waterproof housing, the PF-12Plus is perfect for measurements directly at the sampling point.
Unboxing of the compact photometer PF-12Plus
The PF-12Plus photometer is delivered in a robust case equipped with helpful accessories, which makes the device particularly popular for on-site analysis. With the supplied batteries and screwdriver, the device is immediately ready for use.
Optionally, the PF-12Plus can be equipped with a battery pack (REF 919201).
Get started with the PF-12Plus
Before using the device for the first time, read the manual and familiarize yourself with all the functions of the device. To put the PF-12Plus into operation, first insert the batteries that are included in the scope of delivery into the battery compartment on the back of the photometer. The battery compartment can be opened using the supplied screwdriver. After inserting the batteries, the device is ready for use. A few seconds after switching on, the start screen for entering the method appears.
The compact photometer PF-12Plus enables the evaluation of colorimetric tests in a 16 mm tube test. Test selection is easy with just three clicks by entering the test number or by selecting the test from the menu. Follow the instructions on the display of the device and you will get high-precision measurement results clearly presented.
General information
The compact photometer PF-12Plus is a filter photometer which is ideally suited for both mobile use and use in the laboratory.
The device enables measurements in the wavelength range from 345-690 nm. During the measurement, the light generated by the xenon lamp is guided through one of the 7 interference filters into the cuvette shaft of the device. The proportion of the absorbed light is detected after passing through the sample and converted into the concentration of the analyte examined using a stored calibration. In addition to measuring the absorbed light, the PF-12Plus also offers the possibility of determining the nephelometric turbidity units (1-1000 NTU) by measuring the light scattering at a 90° angle thanks to the specially placed 860 nm LED.
The unique NTU-Check automatically checks for interfering turbidity with each measurement and warns the user.
The illuminated display and the intuitive menu navigation allow you to work with the device quickly, conveniently and comfortably, making it the ideal compact photometer across the entire spectrum of water analysis.
The compact photometer PF-12Plus enables an evaluation of the following photometrically evaluable MACHEREY-NAGEL test kits:
In addition to the large selection of available rapid tests from the MACHEREY-NAGEL portfolio, a number of special applications can also be carried out with the PF-12Plus. In addition to the pre-programmed methods, customer-specific applications can also be programmed.
Pre-programmed methods:
- Nephelometric turbidity measurement; 860 nm; 1 – 1000 NTU
- Formazin attenuation units; 620 nm; 4 – 350 FAU
- Spectral absorption coefficient (SAC) 436 nm; 0.4 – 100 1/m
- Total suspended solids (TSS); 690 nm; 70 – 750 mg/L
Custom Programming:
- Linear functions
- Non-linear functions up to the 4th degree
- Logarithmic functions
Tips and tricks
Useful accessories
Battery pack (REF 919201):
- With the help of the optional battery pack, you can ensure the power supply of your PF-12Plus is even easier and less complicated. The battery pack enables easy charging via the device's USB port at home or on the go in the car.
Data export software:
- With the MACHEREY-NAGEL data export software, you can export measurement data simply and easily and process them in data processing programs. Simply use our free software for this, which you can download via the web link www.mn-net.com/de/nanocolor-geraete-updates.
Common sources of error
Incorrect measurement results due to dirty cuvettes:
- The cleanliness of the cuvettes plays a decisive role in the measurement result. Clean the cuvettes each time before inserting them into the cuvette slot using the cuvette cleaning cloth provided.
Incorrect measurement results due to a dirty cuvette slot:
- Leaking sample solution in the cuvette slot and contamination from dust/dirt can contaminate it and negatively affect the measurements. Therefore, make sure that no sample solution overflows when inserting the cuvettes. It is also important to protect the cuvette slot from contamination such as dust. If the cuvette slot is dirty, you can carefully clean it with a cotton swab and isopropanol. Never use metal or sharp objects for cleaning.
Sources of error due to missing testing of the device:
-
According to the requirements of the DWA-A 704 worksheet, the photometer should be checked twice a year. The test solution NANOCONTROL NANOCHECK 2.0 (REF 925703) can be used to check the photometric accuracy or the test solution NANOCONTROL NANOTURB (REF 925702) to check the nephelometric turbidity unit.
- MACHEREY-NAGEL recommends defining your own test intervals depending on the intensity of use and in accordance with your own internal quality specifications.
The symbol for removing the cuvette is displayed although no cuvette is inserted:
- The compact photometer PF-12Plus has no active cuvette recognition. Before changing the wavelength, a check is carried out to determine whether the optical properties are correct for the measurement to be taken.
If the determined values deviate from the target values, the device issues a warning. Since this is mainly the case when there is a cuvette in the slot, the user is prompted by the warning to check this. By confirming with OK, the device is informed that there are no more cuvettes in the slot. It will then continue the test and the measurement can be carried out.
The reason for the discrepancy between the actual and setpoint values can be, for example, large temperature differences between the last two switch-on processes.
